About the village

Al-Bireh: springs and agriculture in southern Beqaa

Al-Bireh is a village in Rashaya District, Beqaa Governorate, about 78 km from Beirut, 45 km from Zahle and 15 km from Rashaya. Its average elevation is approximately 1,250 metres above sea level, with higher points reaching about 1,310 metres. Its built-up area includes an older core and a more recent extension.

The village is known for several local springs, including Ain Al-Falouj, whose water resources have supported agriculture and orchards. A local interpretation links the village name to a Syriac word associated with a fortress or a place of water, although the etymology is not considered definitive.
